Interview with Heel WIT
In the October ‘09 issue of the Dutch magazine Ariadne at Home there’s an interview with Heel Wit.
We talk about: why textiles, inspiration and glorious white. White creates freedom. White can be used anytime anywhere. Looks just as good on a rustic bed as in a minimalist, modern bedroom. Besides, I find comfort in white shades. I can’t imagine any other colour on my bed.
Because I was unable to find any proper white bed linen I decided to design this myself, using the brand name WIT.
In hindsight it was quite natural that I wound up working with textiles as I was more or less spoon fed this whilst growing up: my mother was a seamstress and made lovely skirt suits for posh ladies. She was always occupied with beautiful fabrics, beads and buttons.
The first step in creating the bed linen was finding the right type of cotton. The right weave, the right colour and right structure. But above all, nice to the touch. The duvet cover should make you feel as if you’re slipping into a luxury hotel bed every night. Soft and fresh, light and delicate on your skin. Once I’d found the right fabric I was able to start designing. That I wanted to work with white was obvious, but not bland white, no flat duvet covers. I wanted to do something with the fabric, give it real allure. Graphic or romantic, minimalist or playful.
Ideas came readily, by carefully observing my surroundings, observing fashion, photographs and daisies in the grass.
I always have my feelers out. I’ve learned to strengthen my sensibilities whilst at art school. You’re forced to “dig deep” enabling you to see everyday mundane things from an entirely new perspective. A puffed sleeve can serve as inspiration for a new design.
I love being busily involved in my web shop Heel WIT.
